TRANSDANUBE “Sustainable Transport and Tourism along the Danube”

The project is funded under the South-East Europe Transnational Cooperation Programme, Priority Axis „Improvement of accessibility”, and Area of Intervention „Improve coordination in promoting, planning and operation for primary and secondary transportation networks”.

The project duration is 24 months during October 2012-September 2014.

The project total budget is 2,371,030.65 Euro.

The main objective of this transnational project is to develop Sustainable Mobility along the Danube, including environmentally friendly modes of transport (train, bus, bike and shipping) in order to improve the accessibility and to facilitate the concept of sustainable tourism in the whole Danube region.

The specific objectives are: improving accessibility of regions along the Danube through sustainable mobility offers; increasing the added value of tourism for regions along the river Danube through mobility and tourism marketing packages; highlighting the benefits of sustainable mobility offers for the regions; increasing knowledge about tourist flows access routes and transport offers in the Danube region; improving awareness, knowledge and promotion for sustainable mobility in the Danube region; shifting to environmentally friendly mobility; extending the cooperation structures between partner regions, tourist destinations and source regions; providing a basis for further activities and implementing follow-up and investment projects.

TRANSDANUBE is implemented by a Consortium that consists in 49 organisations from EU Member States (Austria, Bulgaria, France, Germany, Hungary, Italy, Romania and Slovakia) and Non-Member States (Croatia, Serbia). The Danube Delta Biosphere Reserve Authority from Romania is an Associated Strategic Partner in this project.

The partners are regional development agencies, nonprofit organizations, local authorities, most of them are coming from the tourism and transport sectors, two important sectors for the economic development in the Danube Region. The 14 financing partners of the project are: Environment Agency Austria, Danube Tourist Commission (Austria), Regional government of Burgenland (Austria), Bratislava Self-Governing Region Department of Strategy and project management (Slovakia), West Pannon Regional and Economic Development Nonprofit Ltd (Hungary), Bakony and Balaton Regional Tourism Nonprofit Ltd.(Hungary), Regional Administration of Vidin Region (Bulgaria), Club Sustainable Development of Civil Society (Bulgaria), The National Institute for Research and Development in Tourism (Romania), The South-East Regional Development Agency (Romania), Slovak Cycle Club, Danube Office Ltd.(Slovakia), Danube Competence Center (Germany), Regional Agency for Development of the Eastern Serbia (Serbia).

SE RDA’s role in the TRANSDANUBE project: elaboration of the transport & tourism system analysis; setting-up of the strategy and action plan for the sustainable development of transport and tourism and access facilitation towards and inside the Danube Delta Biosphere Reserve and Macin Mountains National Park; elaboration of the feasibility study for the development of naval and cruise transport connections between Braila, Galati, Tulcea and fast connections to the Danube Delta; elaboration of the feasibility study for setting-up bicycle routes in the Danube Delta; development of an investment plan to develop Tulcea as an intermodal node; setting-up of a data base with information concerning the transport offers that will be included in a digital map; setting-up of an integrated eco-tourism circuit to capitalize the natural and cultural resources from the Danube Delta through the development of mobility offers (bike tracks/routes) in the Danube Delta and other localities along the Danube, intermodal transport offers that combine bike tracks/routes with other means of transport (ship, bus) in order to facilitate the access to the Danube Delta and Macin Mountains National Park; setting-up of the marketing strategy to promote the soft mobility packages; organisation of meetings with local stakeholders; integration of the sustainable mobility concept in the regional development plans.
